Brand Challenge
When I was awarded the branding and advertising engagement for Calixas Yachts, the company existed primarily through architectural renderings and a single 3D visualization of the Calixas C2. The first yacht was still being constructed across multiple locations worldwide, with photography of the completed vessel not expected for another six months. The challenge was to build a compelling luxury brand presence and launch campaign before the product itself physically existed.

Industry Disruption
At a time when luxury yachts were typically custom-designed one at a time — from hull to helicopter pad — the founding partners of Calixas envisioned a different model inspired by the aerospace and automotive industries: semi-custom “crossover yachts” built with greater efficiency, consistency, and modern technological integration.
Demand for new custom yachts had reached historic highs, with wait times extending beyond 36 months. While some buyers turned to retrofitting older vessels, that approach was often costly, time-consuming, and technologically limiting. Calixas entered the market with a forward-thinking alternative designed to modernize the luxury yachting experience.

Identity Inspiration
During the initial briefing, I learned that every Calixas yacht would share the same distinctive round window — a design feature that would make the vessels instantly recognizable. While sketching ideas during the discussion, I drew the window shape on a napkin as a potential logo direction. The concept immediately resonated with the founding partners and became the foundation for the Calixas visual identity system and broader brand language.

Strategy
I typically begin by putting myself in the mindset of the target audience. Purchasing a $10 million yacht — with an additional annual operating cost exceeding $2 million — initially felt far removed from everyday experience. But conversations with the naval architect revealed something unexpectedly universal: ultra-high-net-worth buyers are still motivated by many of the same core desires that drive all human decision-making — family, safety, comfort, meaningful experiences, and the enjoyment of life’s rewards.
That insight became foundational to the Calixas brand strategy. Rather than focusing solely on luxury specifications or technical features, the brand positioning centered on lifestyle, emotional connection, and the experience of modern yachting itself.
Influencer Strategy
Recognizing yacht captains as key purchase influencers, I felt traditional ad placements would be far less effective than direct community engagement. Instead, I proposed a peer-to-peer partnership event with Dockwalk — an online magazine and networking platform exclusive to superyacht captains and crew — creating an opportunity for authentic interaction through tours, technical discussions, and experiential brand engagement.
Trusted Collaboration
The luxury yacht industry is a remarkably close-knit community where relationships and reputation matter deeply. Early in the Calixas launch, I connected with several generous media partners while expanding my understanding of the industry. Those relationships grew organically through mutual respect, collaboration. They shared enthusiasm for the brand — leading to meaningful editorial opportunities, expanded visibility, and long-standing professional connections that continue to this day.
Experiential Activation
During the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show, I noticed umbrellas appearing across the docks each afternoon as rainstorms rolled through. That observation sparked a proposed experiential activation: branded Calixas umbrella stations that would transform attendees into a moving visual presence throughout the marina — a simple but highly visible form of organic brand amplification.
